The first election under the new law was held in 1994 and Mohammad Hanif was elected by direct vote of voters. He served for eight consecutive years till 4 April 2002. Among them, the provision of direct election of women commissioners was introduced in 1999 in 30 reserved seats and the number of wards in Dhaka City Corporation was increased to 90. Sadek Hossain Khoka was elected as the second mayor in the undivided Dhaka City by direct vote of the voters. He served for more than 9 years from April 5, 2002, to December 1, 2011. In 1801 the population of the city was only two lakh and by 1840 it had gradually decreased to 51 thousand 636 people.

Between 1801 and 1840, many densely populated areas near Dhaka to the east and northeast, such as Narinda, Faridabad, Uri, and Alamganj, were largely abandoned. Dhaka’s administrative importance increased dramatically again between 1905 and 1911 when it was made the capital of a new province called East Bengal and Assam. Along with this, its population also started to increase. This growth trend continued during the later Pakistan period as well. In 1947 the population of Dhaka was only 2 lakh 95 thousand. In 1951 it increased to 3 lakh 35 thousand 928 people. Then in 1961 5 lakh 50 thousand 143 people. According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, the population of Dhaka in 1970 was about 18 lakh, according to the 1981 census it was 40 lakh 23 thousand 883 people. According to the 1991 census, the population of the capital stood at 68 lakh 11 thousand 642 people. According to the 2001 census, the population of Dhaka is 83 lakh 78 thousand 59 people. According to the latest census of 2011,

the population of the city is 1 crore 3 million. According to the latest 2011 census, the population of Dhaka South was 38,83,423. In the greater interest of providing services to the city dwellers, the government declared the Dhaka City Corporation dissolved on November 23, 2011, as per the Local Government Amendment Bill-2011. According to this law, it was announced to divide Dhaka City Corporation into two administrative regions on December 4, 2011. As a result, Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation started their journey on February 1, 2012. Dhaka South City Corporation consists of five regions and 57 wards.

Elections were not held on time due to legal complications. The first election of the two bifurcated city corporations was held on 28 April 2015. Mr Mohammad Saeed Khokon was elected the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation by direct vote of the people. According to the decision of the National Implementation Committee on Administrative Reorganization (NICAR) held on May 9, 2016, the size of Dhaka South City Corporation has changed, the government has formed 18 wards consisting of 8 unions on the outskirts of Dhaka. At present, the total number of wards in Dhaka South is 75. According to the information received from the Urban Planning Department, the permanent, temporary, and floating population currently living in Dhaka South is about 12 million.
